"Environment": Local Millet is a Strategic Option for Ramadan Tables and Supporting Food Security in the Kingdom

The Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture announced, as part of its Ramadan awareness campaign under the slogan "Kheir Arduna" (The Goodness of Our Land), that locally grown millet is a strategic crop for supporting food security and sustainable agriculture in Saudi Arabia. Millet cultivation is concentrated in the regions of Makkah, Jazan, Asir, Al-Baha, and Madinah, with pearl millet being the most widespread, alongside finger millet, foxtail millet, kodo millet, barnyard millet, and proso millet. The Ministry noted that millet is rich in fiber, protein, and minerals such as iron and magnesium, is gluten-free, and is increasingly popular during Ramadan for use in traditional dishes and baked goods. The Sustainable Rural Development Programme "Reef Saudi" supports millet farmers to boost local production, reduce import dependency, and advance Vision 2030 targets.
