Biostratrigraphy of Calcareous Nannofossils in the Upper Eocene

The journal Applied Ecology and Environmental Research published, in its August 2020 issue, a joint study by the Fossils Department of the Saudi Geological Survey and the Faculty of Marine Sciences at King Abdulaziz University titled "Biostratigraphy of Calcareous Nannofossils in the Upper Eocene," presenting preliminary findings on the first Priabonian-age fossil record in northern Saudi Arabia. The study dated the limestone layers of the Rashrashiya formation, exposed northeast of Al-Qurayyat near the Saudi-Jordanian border, to the Priabonian age at 37 million years, containing 44 species of calcareous nannofossils classified under 21 genera, and linked these layers to Upper Eocene strata in eastern Jordan. It also concluded the limestone formed in a shallow, offshore marine environment on a carbonate continental shelf rich in oxygen and sunlight.
