Saudi Arabia Hosts the Most Beautiful Geological Landmark in the World
السعودية تحتضن أجمل معلم جيولوجي في العالم
The Saudi Geological Survey announced that Jabal Qidr, in the Khaybar lava field in Saudi Arabia, was named among the 100 best geological heritage sites selected by the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS) and UNESCO from 181 nominations submitted by 56 countries. The Authority described Jabal Qidr as one of the largest volcanic fields, among the last volcanoes to erupt some 1,000 years ago, forming a large volcanic cone about 400 meters in relative height, whose basaltic lava flows covered stone structures ("desert kites") built approximately 5,000 years ago during the Bronze Age.
