The National Center for Waste Management (Mwan) announced completion of the Kingdom's first research trial using iron slag, a steel-industry byproduct, as an additive in ordinary Portland cement (OPC), supporting sustainability and circular economy principles. The five-month trial, conducted with Riyadh Cement Company under the Center's full supervision, used 1,273.88 tons of iron slag; results showed that adding 1%-2% iron slag improves cement properties, confirming the feasibility of using this industrial byproduct to reduce waste and lower carbon emissions.
