For 48 years, the Grand Hajj Symposium has been a pivotal Islamic platform, contributing extensively to discussions on vital issues impacting the Islamic world. Since its inception in 1977 (1397 AH), it has published over 200 academic papers. The symposium underscores Saudi Arabia's cultural and civilizational roles in supporting Hajj and pilgrims. It highlights the significant advancements and projects at the Two Holy Mosques for the global Muslim community. Over 1,000 speakers from more than 60 countries participated in its editions. The symposium champions serene intellectual discourse on topics pertinent to the Islamic Ummah during Hajj. It facilitates scholarly interaction with academic institutions, forums, and researchers worldwide, promoting integration, fraternity, and broader acquaintance within the Islamic Ummah. The symposium also provides insights into the Islamic world's modern challenges and issues. The symposium has explored diverse themes reflecting the evolving times and their relevance. These have ranged from the awareness of Hajj, Islamic unity, the significance of Jerusalem and Al-Aqsa Mosque, and returning to Allah as a pathway to success to the behavioural impacts of faith during Hajj, Hajj as a journey of self-purification, the wisdom behind Hajj legislation, and the sanctity of time and place in Hajj. Other topics have included Islam's response to contemporary challenges, the unity of Muslims against modern geopolitical blocs, the necessity for development within the Islamic Ummah, and the role of the Arabic language. Further themes have covered the etiquette of Hajj, Makkah's recognition as the capital of Islamic culture, the facilitation of Hajj by Sharia, and the jurisprudence of simplifying Hajj practices. Recent themes have also addressed public health principles in the context of prophetic teachings, adaptations in Hajj post-pandemic, and the jurisprudence of facilitation in Hajj. This year's symposium (1445 AH) focuses on "Observing Religious Permissibility and Adherence to Established Regulations in Hajj Rituals." Reflecting on its historical progression, the symposium began as informal seminars in 1970 (1390 AH), evolving in its approach by 1977 (1397 AH) while maintaining its traditional essence. Between 2015 and 2022 (1436-1443 AH), it notably enhanced its research quality, selection of guests and topics, and relevance to global happenings. The Grand Hajj Symposium aims to be the leading platform for thought leadership and disseminating authoritative knowledge on Hajj rituals. It brings together distinguished scholars and experts to share their insights, research, and best practices, thereby enhancing the efficacy of the Hajj experience. Its objectives include highlighting Saudi Arabia's role in the cultural and civilizational sphere, illuminating notable achievements and developments in the Two Holy Mosques, fostering intellectual dialogue on Ummah-related issues during Hajj, promoting constructive academic engagement, and fostering greater global unity and understanding among Muslims.
