The Green Middle East Initiative ...A Comprehensive Regional Environmental Alliance to Reduce the Impacts of Climate Change on the Region

The Green Middle East Initiative is a Saudi Arabia-led regional initiative aimed at reducing the impacts of climate change on the Middle East through coordinated action among regional states. It targets the planting of 50 billion trees across the Middle East — equivalent to 5% of the global afforestation target and the restoration of 200 million hectares of degraded land — including 10 billion trees within Saudi Arabia and 40 billion across the wider region. The first summit was held in Riyadh on 25 October 2021 with leaders from 28 countries, the second was held in Sharm el-Sheikh on 7 November 2022 under joint Saudi-Egyptian presidency, and the first session of the Ministerial Council was held in Jeddah in 2024 with more than 29 countries and international organizations. The second session of the Ministerial Council is launching in Jeddah on the twenty-ninth of January of the current month, with participation from 31 regional member states from Asia and Africa, plus the United Kingdom as an observer.
