Launch of the Ministerial Council of the Middle East Green Initiative in Jeddah with Regional Participation to Enhance Cooperation in Addressing Environmental Challenges

The second meeting of the Ministerial Council of the Middle East Green Initiative began in Jeddah, chaired by the Minister of Environment, Water and Agriculture, Eng. Abdulrahman bin Abdulmohsen Al-Fadhli, with participation of 31 regional member states plus the United Kingdom as observer. The Council welcomed 4 new member states (Ghana, Sierra Leone, Sri Lanka, and Syria) and congratulated Eng. Ibrahim Al-Turki on his appointment as Secretary-General, noting total member-state commitments to plant over 22 billion trees and that Saudi Arabia's Saudi Green Initiative targets rehabilitating 40 million hectares of land, aims to raise natural reserve area beyond 18% of the Kingdom (targeting 30% by 2030), has more than tripled waste recycling versus 2021, and has planted more than 151 million trees using renewable water sources. The Initiative was launched in October 2021, with a financial grant and hosting of its secretariat in Riyadh announced at the second summit in Sharm El-Sheikh in November 2022.
