Smart Agriculture in the Kingdom.. A Green Revolution for Resource Sustainability and Achieving Food Security

The Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture is working to localise modern agriculture in Saudi Arabia and support innovation in the agricultural sector to achieve food security, reduce imports, and sustain natural and water resources. The Ministry employs technologies including hydroponics, aquaponics, vertical farming, high-tech greenhouses, and AI-driven smart agriculture, which reduce water consumption and increase productivity. Pilot projects, including trials at the Estdama centre, have demonstrated water savings of up to 90% in hydroponic systems, while tomato yields in high-tech glass greenhouses reached 99 kg per square metre with only three litres of water per kilogram. Additional technologies such as biofertilisers, nanotechnology, biochar, and seasonal fodder cultivation are also being applied to improve water efficiency and agricultural productivity in arid environments.
