Minister of Culture and Media Inaugurates the First Cinema in the Kingdom After a 35-Year Hiatus

Dr. Awwad bin Saleh Al-Awwad, Minister of Culture and Media and Chairman of the Board of the General Authority for Audio-Visual Media, inaugurated the first cinema in the Kingdom in over 35 years on a Wednesday evening, opening with the 2018 film "Black Panther," screened for trial audiences ahead of a public opening a week later, operated by AMC Entertainment following the Ministry's earlier award of the first cinema-operating license to the company. AMC plans to partner with the Public Investment Fund, which intends to invest up to SAR 10 billion in entertainment projects by 2030, aiming for around 350 cinemas with over 2,500 screens in the Kingdom by 2030. Three additional screens were set to open at King Abdullah Financial District in the third quarter of 2018, as part of a partnership that could see AMC open 40 or more cinema complexes in the Kingdom over five years. The Authority classified Black Panther as suitable for ages 15 and above under the Kingdom's newly prepared film classification system.
